History

The reason why this project exists goes like this: Back in the early 90s, I (scamp/vacuum) deeply fell in love with xtracker - the Evolution: xtracker to xtracker32 first dos tracker software with an intuitive SAA-Interface and lots of ideas to make creating music much more convenient than ever before. Most other trackers more or less tried to clone protrackers ugly graphical interface. Some made it even more ugly and harder to use.

Xtracker was different. There was no need to touch the mouse if you didn't want to. But you also didn't have to learn ten thousand different shortcuts - the SAA menu interface made it a breeze to get used to the system. You didn't have to use hex codes for working with effects - instead there was a nice popup box listing all effects including explanations on what they do. The patterneditor had tons of powerfull editing commands, different trackviews and usefull coloring options.

To make a long story short: xtracker rocked my world.

Now, nearly 10 years later, dos is dead. Due to the usage of the VCPI interface, xtracker only runs in plain dos - a windows dos box won't do. Besides it doesn't work on todays CPU's anymore. So, today xtracker is as dead as dos itself is.

Back in the days everyone switched over to Windows95, I started to miss my beloved xtracker. But life goes on, and I had other stuff to do. At the end of 1999 I more and more felt the need to do crappy happy hardcore tunes again, just like I did back in 1994. I checked out a few trackers, and none of them looked as convenient as xtracker did. That's why I decided to start writing my own Windows-tracker with all the features I wanted. Beeing highly busy with commercial work for my company, I sadly had to stop working on this project (called 'xtracker32') in early 2000 - and it took over a year until I had enough time and motivation to continue working on it.
